Starting your Summer Internship?

Here are a few tips I learnt from coaching over 2000 candidates

1. Attitude. This is worth 100 times every other advice. Be positive. Embrace feedbacks and quickly use them to improve. Ask for work, help your co-interns.

2. Proofread every document you produce. Being a « good » summer intern vs a « bad » one is often times a function of how many small mistakes you do. Print everything, read it 2 or 3 times and then only send it to your boss.

3. Go the extra mile. Always try to add value, even when you perform grunt work. When compiling data, highlight key insights. When drafting slides, suggest an executive summary.

4. Network. Knowing people inside the bank will be decisive to get a returning offer. Indeed, if your team cannot hire you because they don’t have a headcount, you will need another team to sponsor you. Don’t wait until the end of the Summer, it will be too late.

5. Realise your are constantly evaluated. The Summer Internship is a 10-week interview. Every interaction do matter: lunches, drinks, conferences, projects and trainings.

The last one is more personal: don’t be a stupid wannabe-shark. No one will hire you. And if you do get hired, you won’t get respect from your team.
